How to Know Which Type of Work Lamp to Use?
Light Quality
Defining the quality of light cannot be based solely on its constituent parameters, such as light intensity, colour temperature or colour rendering. Although these factors are fundamental, the methods used to measure them are often inconclusive, and taken individually are unable to represent the intrinsic complexity of light. In fact, light quality is the result of an interdependence between these parameters, which influence each other and determine the overall effectiveness of lighting.
Precisely for this reason, the IEC 60601-2-41 standard, which regulates surgical and medical lamps, does not impose stringent parameters but offers margins for flexibility, recognising that the quality of light cannot be defined through a single absolute value. The creation of a synthetic index taking into account the relationships between intensity, colour temperature and colour rendering would be desirable, but to date such a tool does not exist.
In the absence of such an index, individual parameters are accepted with the benefit of inventory, knowing that their real significance only emerges when considering their interaction. The quality of light is, therefore, a complex and dynamic balance that requires a holistic approach to be understood and valued.
Regulatory Requirements
RIMSA’s industrial lighting devices are fully compliant with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, as well as EU Regulation 2019/2015 and EU Regulation 2019/2020. In addition, all products meet the requirements of the following standards:

Colour Temperature
Colour temperature directly influences how tissues are perceived during surgical procedures. A well-balanced value—between warm and cool light—enhances visibility while reducing eye fatigue. However, it’s the interaction between color temperature, color rendering index (CRI), and light intensity that truly defines the overall quality of surgical lighting.
Light Intensity
Luminous intensity is crucial for ensuring clear visibility during tasks that demand high levels of focus and precision. However, a high intensity alone is not enough—what truly matters is the even distribution of light, which eliminates shadowed areas and maintains consistent illumination across the workspace.
The quality of lighting comes from the balance between intensity, color temperature, and the size of the illuminated area, ensuring optimal performance in both medical and industrial settings.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI)
CRI measures how faithfully colours appear under a light source compared to natural light. A high CRI is essential for accurately distinguishing details, especially in medical, technical, and industrial settings. However, CRI alone is not enough—the combination of color temperature, luminous intensity, and uniform light distribution is what truly optimizes overall visibility and color accuracy.
